Look For Opportunities Abroad – In the absence of internship breaks in your locality or in your country, take your search to the next level. Think about going abroad and prepare for it as early as possible. Here is a rule of thumb. Look for openings which welcome international students. This will be helpful should you need to have further studies in your field.

Free Events. Find free things to do in your local community. Hiking, picnics, beach combing, swimming, berry picking, music concerts in the park, library visits, and more. Expensive trips to the theatre can be replaced by fun family activities in the sun or expanding your horizons at the library.

Al Horford. This may be an unconventional pick, but all one must do is look at the Hawks’ record this season. Moreover, look at the team’s record since they drafted Horford. What was once a miserably unsuccessful franchise just a few short years ago is now one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference. What’s the difference, you ask? The presence of Horford, one of the best defensive players in the game.

Get out of the house. Join an in-person networking group. The Unemployed Professionals group meets and hosts a guest speaker every Tuesday at the Portland career center. The Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce is another great place to meet, talk with others and spread the word about you.

Do informational interviewing as a reality check for the above. Find out from your contacts in the career field you’re interested in if your skill set is up-to-date.

The Joblink Center is a great resource for resume help as well as computers for job search use, help with job searches and access to training. Best of all, most of the services offered at the Joblink are free. Also, ask the HR person at your previous job for resume tips and what they look for in a resume. You may also have friends that you could ask to review your resume to get an outsiders perspective.
