“Many graduates.reported they would have done something differently in college if they had to do it over.been more careful when selecting a major. When asked what they would have chosen instead, 40% of the sample said they would have chosen a professional major, like education, nursing, or social work” (Stone, Van Horn, Zukin 24).
From the consumer’s side, a trip to a restaurant is a place to go to be pleased, to have someone else cook for them and to have a professional work with the spices to create a dish they will like. Having salt on the table isn’t satisfactory to most of them because they feel like they are not getting what they paid for.
This seems overly critical of a good resource. How about MPUG. MPUG’s job board typically features between 400 and 700 jobs at any given time, all having to do with project management. The quick tour gives you a rapid insight into the features of the job board that can benefit your next job search as an employee. However, this is a benefit available only to current members of MPUG. (In fact, you won’t find the link anywhere on the site unless you’re logged in as a member.) Also in the future, MPUG says they will show you how to exploit the career center and we presume Cal Jobs, as a hiring manager or employer.
If you are very flexible, want to travel, and can tolerate low pay for a few years, this might be a great option for you. As a peace corps volunteer, you will make a difference in the lives of people in need. For advice on becoming a member of the Peace Corps, read “Ten Reasons to Join the Peace Corps” and “Pros and Cons of Joining the Peace Corps.” This will also look fabulous on your resume.
To be a successful entrepreneur, you can’t go into the game thinking that if you fail, there’s a second time around because x or y entrepreneurs had a failure and went on to success.
Network, add to your skills set, and get some experience in your field of interest. You will be amazed at how effective volunteering is. Some of the best job related word of mouth, referrals and karma comes from volunteering.
Find mentors now. Many successful professionals love to give back by being a mentor. You maybe surprised at how receptive many are. They are a great network to show you the ropes, and maybe make connections and recommendations when you need a job. If you don’t know where to start to look for a mentor, try your school’s alumni services (they may share some of their contacts or to give your coordinates to some of the people on their list), people from professional associations, profs and their contacts, speakers or guests at events, people in the news. Some of these mentors become your life-long friends and future clients or suppliers when you make inroads to that coveted job. It’s a win-win situation and a lot of the mentors are well aware of this.
Usually this is because you aren’t clear enough about your message to boil it down to one page. When you’re clear on your core message, it will easily fit. Remember a resume’s intent is to get an interview. You want employers to think you are interesting enough to bring in for a conversation. It does not need to tell your whole life story.
